Fall Retreat

The Old College retreat for the Fall Semester 2011 was based on theme of Our Lady of Sorrows. During the retreat, each of us chose a specific sorrow, which we meditated on throughout the weekend. I would like to share some the insights that I had about the third sorrow: Losing Jesus in Jerusalem (Luke 2:41-52)

The Holy Family was traveling to Jerusalem for a celebration with their family and friends. The Passover feast is central to the Jewish religion, and so would be a time of great rejoicing. How much more must have this high point have made the pain of the Blessed Virgin upon losing Jesus in the city. The most recent memories that Mary had of her lost Son were joyful moments, and these contrasted with the loss she suffered in her heart.

The sorrow of Mary is prolonged over the course of three days. But an undercurrent of hope keeps Mary going on her long and helpless search. How many people would have given up searching for Jesus after not finding him after only one day? Only the trust in Divine Providence that Mary had could keep her diligent, until at last she finds Jesus in the Temple on the third day. Let us pray to the Sorrowful Mother for the grace to trust in Divine Providence, so that we too may find Jesus in a world that has lost sight of him.

Ave Crux,
Paul Fortin
