Ryan and I have already gone through a few weeks of class, and now are in the full swing of things here in Leuven. For the past few weeks we have been busy with travel plans, school, formation, and icon writing.
I have spent most of my spare time down in the Aula, where the seminarians of the American College work on Icon Writing. This process has been incredibly prayerful and fruitful for me. The image we are writing is of Mary placing the stole of priesthood on John.
First of all, the writing takes tons of patience. It takes about 2 hours over a small area to make a noticeable difference. But it is well worth the wait. This is what my icon looks like so far, with plenty work left to do.
I have been working with Fr. Paul, the iconographer here at the seminary, and talking with several Holy Cross Religious, (Fr. Kevin, Deacon Kevin Grove, Anthony Stachowski), and am creating an icon of Blessed Basil Moreau, the Founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. I have not begun actually writing it, but am still prayerfully drawing out what the icon will look like (since there is no icon of him to copy).I am so excited to begin working on this, but will not begin preparing a board until I have finished the current one. Icons take plenty of time, but the icon is well worth the wait.
In the Peace of Christ,
Matt Hovde
